My journey to psychotherapy

My journey into psychotherapy

I never imagined that my own curiosity about people, psychology and what shapes us would eventually lead me to become a psychotherapist.

My journey began with studying Psychology and Mental Health at UCC, followed by a BA (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy and an MA in Integrative Psychotherapy. Along the way, I became increasingly fascinated by the complexity of human experience—our relationships, our histories, our losses, our struggles and, importantly, our capacity to change.

Over the past six years, I’ve had the privilege of sitting with people from many different backgrounds and supporting them through some of the most difficult periods of their lives.

I’ve worked with people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, burnout, stress and periods of significant emotional distress. I’ve worked in community services, private practice, corporate mental health and university settings, including supporting students through some incredibly challenging moments in their lives.

But beyond the diagnoses, assessments and therapeutic approaches, there is always a person sitting in front of me.

And that person has a story.

My role is not to tell someone how they should live their life or to have all the answers. It is to create a space where they can begin to explore their experiences openly and safely—to understand themselves a little better, make sense of what they have been through, and perhaps discover possibilities that they couldn’t see before.

I work from an integrative, humanistic and trauma-informed perspective, because I believe therapy should be shaped around the individual rather than trying to fit the individual into a particular model.

Becoming a psychotherapist has been both a professional and deeply human journey for me. I’m continually learning, reflecting and developing, and I feel incredibly privileged to do work that allows me to connect with people at such an important point in their lives.

Ultimately, I believe therapy is about relationship.

About being heard.

About being understood.

And sometimes, about having someone sit alongside you while you find your way forward.

Everyone has a story. Sometimes we just need a safe place to begin telling it.

I believe in walking alongside my clients on their journey, offering a fully present and available space for healing and growth. My path to becoming a psychotherapist is deeply personal, rooted in my own experiences and struggles. I spent many years in personal therapy, both before and during my training, which has given me a profound understanding of the therapeutic process from a client's perspective. This journey has not only shaped my empathy and insight but has also strengthened my commitment to supporting others.
